Is Online Prescribing Safe?

How we keep care clinically sound and your data HIPAA-secure.

The short answer is yes — when it is done correctly. The longer answer is that "safe" has two distinct dimensions: clinical safety (are real, qualified clinicians making sound decisions?) and data safety (is your protected health information handled lawfully and securely?). Here is how PrescriberNow addresses both.

Clinical Safeguards

The most important safety layer in any prescribing platform is the quality of the clinical judgment behind every decision. At PrescriberNow, that judgment comes from real, credentialed human providers — not automated approval scripts.

Board-certified, state-licensed providers

Every provider on the PrescriberNow platform holds active board certification and state licensure. You're matched to a provider licensed in your state, so the prescription you receive is always issued by someone legally authorized to practice medicine in your jurisdiction at the time of your visit.

Real clinical review — every time

Your intake information is reviewed by a licensed clinician who reads your health history, evaluates your symptoms, checks for contraindications with any existing medications you report, and applies evidence-based clinical guidelines. There are no auto-approval workflows.

The right to say no

Providers are always free — and obligated — to decline a prescription request when it is not clinically appropriate. This happens when the clinical picture is unclear, the condition is better managed in person, or the requested treatment poses unacceptable risk given the patient's reported history. A provider who declines is doing their job correctly.

Not a pill mill — no volume-based incentives

PrescriberNow providers are not compensated based on approval rates or prescription volume. Their professional obligation is to the patient's health, not to a throughput metric. This structural safeguard is fundamental to clinically sound telehealth.

Identity and Eligibility Checks

Before a prescription can be issued, PrescriberNow verifies the basic eligibility of the person requesting care. This includes:

These checks exist to protect both patients and providers, and to ensure that every prescription is traceable to a real clinical encounter with a verified individual.

HIPAA-Secure Infrastructure

Your health information is protected health information (PHI) under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). PrescriberNow is a HIPAA-covered entity and maintains a comprehensive HIPAA compliance program. Key technical and administrative safeguards include:

When Telehealth Is Not Appropriate

Seek in-person or emergency care immediately if you are experiencing:
  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing, or signs of stroke (sudden numbness, confusion, vision changes, trouble speaking)
  • Severe abdominal pain or uncontrolled bleeding
  • A mental health crisis, suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of harming yourself or others — call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) or 911
  • High fever in an infant or young child
  • Any condition your instinct tells you requires immediate hands-on evaluation
Telehealth is designed for appropriate, non-emergency care. When in doubt, err on the side of in-person or emergency evaluation. No telehealth platform should ever be a barrier to urgent care.

Beyond emergencies, telehealth is also not appropriate for conditions that require physical examination, diagnostic imaging, laboratory work that must be collected in person, or ongoing specialist management of complex multi-system disease. A good telehealth provider will tell you when your situation falls outside the appropriate scope and refer you accordingly.

Your Data Rights

As a patient, you have meaningful rights over your health information under HIPAA and applicable state law. At PrescriberNow, those rights include:

Full details are available on the Your Rights page. If you have questions or want to exercise any of these rights, the contact information on that page will direct you to the appropriate channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can PrescriberNow sell my health data?
No. PrescriberNow does not sell your protected health information. HIPAA prohibits the sale of PHI without explicit patient authorization, and our practices comply with this requirement. See Your Rights for details.
What happens to my data if I never complete a visit?
Information you enter during an incomplete intake is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy. You may contact us at any time to request deletion of data you have submitted. Visit Your Rights for the process.
Are PrescriberNow providers real licensed doctors?
Yes. Providers on the platform are board-certified physicians and licensed nurse practitioners holding valid state licenses. They operate under the same professional and legal obligations as any provider you would see in person.
What stops someone from lying on their intake form to get medication?
Providing false information to obtain a prescription is medical fraud and carries serious legal consequences. Clinically, providers are trained to identify intake responses that are inconsistent, implausible, or that suggest undisclosed risk factors — and to decline when the clinical picture does not support prescribing. No telehealth system is perfectly immune to deception, but multiple clinical and identity safeguards reduce this risk substantially.
Is my information shared with my primary care provider?
PrescriberNow generates a clinical record for each visit. Sharing records with your primary care provider or other treating clinicians is something we encourage for continuity of care and can be arranged. Visit Your Rights or Security for more information on how records are handled.
